How did you start out as a marketer?

I got started in 2010 totally by accident, at the time I was working a government job and wanted to make some extra money.

I didn’t know anything about online marketing and I had no business experience.

So I went around buying courses, mentoring programs, softwares, event tickets and anything I could get my hands on to learn online marketing.

I started to share some of what I’d learnt on social media and built a brand there pretty much by accident as well.

Over time people started to ask me for advice and from there I built a consulting business.

Looking back what is your hardest struggle when it came to delivering results?

My biggest struggle has been having the right business mindset.

It’s very easy to start a business but running a profitable one, well that’s a different story.

How did you get your first client back then, and what kind of service did you do for them?

My first client actually approached me after someone referred them to me.

I was positioned as a social media expert by the person that referred me.

Based on how many other social media experts there are out there, I had some boots to fill!

I was able to give some good advice to the client that increased their engagement and profile online.

What do you find most rewarding about what you do?

Seeing other people who struggled for a long time finally get results.

I know what it’s like to work relentlessly and not get results at all.

Often times it’s a small mindset shift or a simple strategy I share with a client and they see results quite quickly.

Then they go onto creating more success as a result of that.

It’s an indescribable feeling.

We have a lot of readers who are bent on becoming freelancers, aside from freelancing how else can someone earn online, and what is your advice?

Find something that you’re passionate about that you can promote as an affiliate.

If you were given the chance to build your career all over again what would you do differently so that you will achieve your dreams faster?

I would find mentors and a team to help me as a priority.

You won’t be able to achieve the best results possible on your own and you will never be able to scale at all.

Also I know from first hand experience, trial and error is such a painful way to learn, why not reach out to people that have done it before and can ensure you avoid those mistakes.

How is your typical work day structured?

I get up and relax a bit before working, for about 20 minutes maybe.

“The calm before the storm” is the best way to put it 🙂 then set my agenda for the day and I get to work.

I work for around 5-6 hours a day on average and I’m a bit of a late worker in all honesty.

I’ve learnt you don’t need to be an early riser to get great results in business, you just need to find a routine in your workday that suits you.

Can you tell us about a time where you had to put in significant effort up front and then wait a long time for success?

For me it was building my online presence which I did through social media, as I had no budget.

It took time to get recognised, find the right audience and grow it to a point where it was a profitable business.

You’ve been tasked with redesigning the company’s brand strategy from the ground up. Walk us through your process.

My first thing before beginning the branding strategy is knowing who our business is targeting, what we can do to help them and why we are doing it (mission).

What do you do to stay up to date with new marketing techniques?

Continually learn from the best in the business.

Find the best people in your field and stay connected to them, they are likely trying and testing new things all the time to stay ‘on top’.

Can you tell us about a project you’re most proud of from your past work history?

Hitting #1 Best Seller in multiple categories with my book launch, Social Marketing Success.

It took months to write a book and plan I was going to launch the book, but I did it.

The feeling of watching your work come to fruition is indescribable.

Which one book/blog post would you recommend every Marketer should read?

Breakthrough Advertising by Eugene Schwartz.

This book focuses a lot on copywriting, which if you understand can grow your business in multiple areas outside of copywriting.

It will help you with getting clear on who your audience is, how to speak to them in their language and then explain the benefits of your offer.

It’s not about what you say but how you say it, and Breakthrough Advertising is very much the ‘how’ in this process.

What advice would you share with other Marketer’s who want to become more productive?

Spend less time worrying about what others are doing and instead focus on yourself.

If there’s one Marketing Guru you’d recommend who and why.

My one marketing guru to recommend is Frank Kern.

He is always coming out with creative marketing campaigns and teaches some very clear strategies that get great results.
